Volunteers are the lifeblood of our foodbank.
Most of our volunteering opportunities are based at our foodbank distribution centres, where volunteers play a vital role in supporting people in need. From time to time, we also welcome volunteers at our main warehouse to help sort donations, as well as assist with the collection and delivery of supplies.
Helping at a Foodbank Distribution Centre
We are looking for people to help distribute food to people who are in crisis situations. Distribution volunteers meet and listen to people who come to the foodbank with a voucher to get food. If possible, we point people to relevant agencies or sources of support, aid or advice. Some volunteers do more of the “front of house” role; chatting to foodbank users and serving hot drinks. Other volunteers do more of the “behind the scenes” tasks, packing the bags and keeping the stock of food organised.
We are looking for volunteers who:
- Enjoy chatting to people from all walks of like, making them feel welcome
- Can use a computer (but this is not the essential)
- Don’t mind completing a bit of admin so we have accurate records
- Can pack up bags of food, and some who don’t mind lifting
- Can pick up bags of food, and some who don’t mind lifting
If you’re interested in volunteering at one of our Sunderland distribution points, please note that each foodbank manages its own volunteers directly. This means you’ll need to contact the individual foodbank you’d like to support. If you’re unsure who to get in touch with, you can contact us and we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction and help you find the relevant foodbank contact details.
